The origin of the feast of Candlemas is lost in obscurity, but there can be no doubt that it dates from the earliest days of the Church.There was formerly a belief prevalent in many countries that good weather on Candlemas day indicated a long winter and bad crops and that bad weather on the contrary was a good omen. An old Scottish rhyme preserves this superstition.
"If Candlemas day be dry and fair
The half o' winter's to come and mair;
If Candlemas day be wet and foul.
The half o' winter's gone at Yule.
