   from Croom. They were crying. He overheard them and asked what was the matter. The poor woman pointing to her own and her children's bare feet, said they were crying with the cold and hunger. He promptly ordered her to go back to Collopy, a shoemaker in the street (Margin Note: Collopy was a builder and not a shoemaker D. O'C.) and gave her a written order to him for a pair of boots for herself and for each of her children. She did so and before the following evening Collopy had supplied her with the number of pairs of boots ordered. She also got a bag of flour from the Colonel. Collopy had six or seven men working. He lived where Monarty's chemist shop and private house is now. (I am informed by the Very Rev. Canon Curtin P.P. that Colonel Dixon used give £5 annually to the then P.P., for distribution in charity to the poor of Croom, during his residence in Croom Castle)

   The above note is from Thos. Dineen 64, workman, The Lane, Croom, but the following song which I have no doubt was much published, shows the popular feeling towards Dixon to have been anything but friendly. Mrs B. Lyons, tailor's widow, Croom supplied it:-
