O'Duryer's Joe Hurley :- Local publicationsBefore 1850 local education was looked after by *Michael Coffey, who kept school in a one roomed thatched bohaun in Bohereencruig (or Glenlara) a mile from Glenbrohane.
In 1851 two National Schools were opened in Glenbrohane. Irish was then the vernacular of the people tho "The Nation" was generally read in the district. A teacher named MacSperits from the north of Ireland was in charge of the Boy's Sch. and in the eight or nine years he was here he sneered Irish out of the school.
Den Gilmarten (son of a hedge school - master in Ballylanders)-The composer of the foregoing poem succeeded MacSperits. Not being a disciple of Fr. Matthew, he incurred the anger of Fr. O'Brein the PT and was compelled to leave the school. When about to leave(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
