“On May Eve the pishogues were made. One person strove to take his neighbours butter, milk or cream by the help of the devil.”
(ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)opened it was full of froth.I saw another case where the pishogue was stuck on the pillar of a hay-barn. It was a large soft lump like a lump of butter or those fairy-mushrooms.There is a fine Lios or fort between the town of Ballyporeen, Co. Tipperary and Mitchelstown, Co. Cork. On May Eve a woman in white was always seen there. On May Eve each farmer walks through every field on his farm and blesses each one with holy water. He also blesses the boundary fence in particular. There was a farmer in Anglesboro' some years ago and his butter was taken i.e. the produce was taken from his milk. He told the priest about it and he advised the farmer to redden the coultur of the plough, place it under the churn when making the butter and to lock the dairy door. The farmer did so and very soon a neighbouring woman came to the door in flames crying to be let in. They let her in after a while and she gave them back the butter she had taken through pishogues- Faisnéiseoir
