Cork, and about 9 miles north of Macroom, and about 1½ miles in the Millstreet side of Carrigiminas there lived a mean tight fisted old maid commonly known as “Katy Wort”.She had a large amount of money in the bank as she lived a very queer life making a prisoner of every penny she possibly could.
She has a large farm but most of it was bog-land; which however during the years 1906-1916 brought much money to her already swollen purse.Katy had a herdsman named “Tomás a Mhic” who could speak only a few words of English. Tomas got no dainty food for his labour. His food was potatoes or “yellow gruel” i.e. gruel made from Indian meal. In fact he often used to eat the pigs’ food.One day Katy killed a young chicken and put it into a pot over the fire. The chicken, of course was for herself – and no one else need apply.
