- On Christmas night John Connell and I were talking about the Wren's Day, to know would we go out or not. John had a shilling and I had sixpence, so we bought a mouth-organ and a drum. We went down into Mrs, Madden's field and got a branch of holly and brought it home and decorated it with fancy paper. Next morning we went to first mass and when we came home we blackened our faces and I put on my father's trousers and my sister's hat. John got a bib from his sister and an apron from his mother.
The first house we went into was Mrs. Cosgrave's and we got twopence. We went down the street then, and we went into John's Auntie.
We sang the "Wren's Song"
"The Wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
On St. Stephen's Day was caught in the furze
Up with the kettle, and down with the pan,
Give us some money and let us be gone,
If you haven't any money, or if the money is slack,
Give us a cut of your barn brack".
