    at Limerick and rowed out the Shannon. They were accompanied by another man, an accomplice of Scalan's whom he had bribed to murder the girl. When they had gone far out Scanlan's accomplice cast the girl into the water and as she made desperate efforts to come back to the boat, they struck her with the oars. Making a last effort to come to the boat she caught the side with her fingers but they were brutally cut off.
    Soon she was found to be missing and after a long search the body was found on the Clare coast. Scanlan was arrested and at the trial which was held in Limerick he was sentenced to be hanged. The hanging was duly carried out.
