- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)cannot walk about. Sometimes they are tied by the neck with a rope. All these tyings are homemade some made of chain, platted rope or of wood. Sometimes a sugan may be used but the cows eat it. The expression stalling in the cows is often heard and baleing them in is also used.
On May Eve holy water is shaken on the cows and quick beam that is mountain ash hung over the door to keep people from taking the milk.
In this part of the country the people would not like to milk before day break or after sunset. It is only superstitious people milk at these times. When the cow is milked the milker makes the sign of the cross on the cow. A cross cow had often to be spancelled and on a straying cow a log of wood is tied to her leg or a tying put from its horns to its legs to prevent it walking. Sometimes a puicín is put on the cow so that she wont see to stray away. Long ago the people put a warm bed of rushes or sedge or straw under the cows. Now their bed is scanty.
