It was famous far and near for its learned masters and its many famous scholars. When Cromwell was on his home ward march he passed along by Buttervant. When the Monks heard of his departure they sounded the monatary bells with joy, but their joy did not last long, for Cromwell heard the distant bell and ordered his men to go in the direction of the sounding bell. They arrived at Killabraher in a short time. Cromwell burned the monastery to ruins and murdered the brothers who had spent so long atime inside its walls. When he attacked the brothers one of them escaped and ran about a hundred yards but was captured. There he was executed by cutting off his head and the place where his life blood spilled is indebibally marked by a black patch in the centre of the road. Cromwell was so delighted with the capture that he gave an officer called Boles 400,000 acres(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
