One Summer's evening as I stray'd
On yonder verdant hill,
I found that I'd like to walk
Beside the gurgling rill.
I frae'd along the river's brink
When to my eager sight,
There came the place where lov'd ones lie'd,
But then, too soon this lov'ly view
Was from my vision marr'd;
For instantly I was beside
The lov'ly Chapel Yard.
I gaz'd upon its ruined walls;
Decay'd by times rude hand
But now o'erhung with ivy green:
It seem'd to look so grand.
And as I gaz'd with eager eyes
On objects all around,
The Vespers' Bell began to toll
With dull but solemn sound.
And many people, then with joy
