- Local HeroesPatrick Hehir who lives at the Ferry was a good swimmer and diver. This is a story told abount hi. He was standing at Portumna Canal Bridge one day when a man was paying another man for the pigs he had brought from him, and as the buyer was in a steamer going up the Shannon he threw back the money. A five pound note was rolled round some and it fell into the Shannon and sank. Mr. Hehir said he would dive for it. Another man showed him the spot where it fell and he dived down and he brought it up. He got £1 as a reward.I hear the above story form my mother who heard her mother telling it.Name and address of my mother
