- Long ago when people were making their own butter they used to keep it in firkins, made by coopers. People used to make their own candles too, they fattened old goats, and killed them, then they put the fat in the fire to render. This which was called tallow, was poured into a coil, which was used for shaping the candles. Then they put cotton in the tallow for a wick.
Spinning was the chief industry among the country folk, they used to make their own Tweed, and their own wool for making stockings.- Bailitheoir
