  1. Long ago the people were very healthy and the(y) owe a great deal of it to the food they used.
The usual meal was potatoes, milk and a pinch of salt for dinner, oaten bread which was baked on a griddle for breakfast and for supper they uasually (sic) had Indian Meal.
They used only three meals daily - breakfast at eight, dinner at one p.m. and supper at seven p.m.
They generally had a few hours work done before breakfast.
When the bread was being put down to be baked there were certain marks cut on it with a knife. The only mark of this kind I think is used now is a cut down and a cut across it is more or less like the shape of a cross, in most houses in our district this mark is used.
It is supposed that those marks keep the top of the cake from breaking, it also helps the bread to bake up faster.
