- Two Forts.
In the townsland of Shanballyduff, there were two forts, the remains of one is still to be seen. One is situated in Michael Shanahan's land, and the other of which there is no trace is in my father's farm in a place called, "Paddy's Field." The forts were in view of each other, and it was the fairies' custom, to hurl from one fort to the other, with two whitethorn trees in Michael Shanhan's fort, and two quick trees in our fort as goal posts.
Many people declared that they heard the clash of the hurleys, and the whizzing of the ball through the air. A man named Martin Gleeson, a native of Lower Wood, whose brother now lives there, often passed by fort, claims to have heard the clash of hurleys, and the whizzing of the ball through the air.
One night as Martin was pressing by our fort, he got the pleasant odour of meat cooking. The fairies were evidently about to have a feast.
Another night about sixty years ago, Ned Kennedy my friend Grand Uncle of Shanballyduff, was going home from my house about eleven o'clock,(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
