was built. The imprint of the gothic windows and doors are to be seen yet. These windows are taken out and part of the spaces filled to make only sufficient room for the present ones. A hedge school was situated in the village of Drom about one hundred and fifty years ago. In this so-called school Mr. James O'Shaughnessy's father taught the children. These pupils had no special books for writing as we have now-a-days. They wrote on slates with long narrow pieces of slates. The children sat on long planks in the open or under a tree. The teacher taught only a very small amount of Irish. These schools were precedents of the National Schools which came some time later. The teacher went home at night and returned the next morning. Another hedge school was situated near Barna Cross on the Templemore-Borrisoleigh road.
