   It was held in a farmer's house and the ruins of where it was can still be seen. The school master that taught there was called a hedge-master because he used to teach under hedges before he went into this house. This master was a Connaught man and he was a stranger. His name was Thomas Wallace, his address is not known. School was not carried on in farmers' houses in Knocka. Only this master lodged in a farmer's house. Twopence a head per week was paid to him. English, Irish, Mathematics and Writing, were taught in Irish. When the master used to talk to the scholars it was in Irish he used to do it. They had no books but the master used to put the lesson down on a slate for them. No pen no pencil nor paper was used but a slate and a slate pencil. On stools chairs and logs of timber was the way the pupils used to sit. They used to go up to get examined in fours. The master used to write on a big slate that he had on the wall. It was held from 6 p.m. to half past ten at night. He stayed ten years in Knocka. We had another night-school in Knocka. This was held at the house of Mary Maher in the towns-
