Cows are tied in 'bales'.
Three boards are nailed from end to end of the cow house or byre about a yard out from the wall. The lower board is level with the ground. The two top ones are fixed a little higher than a cow and about four inches apart. 'Upright' stakes are fixed about a foot or a foot or a foot and a half apart. Every second stake is loose at the top and can be moved back until the cows head is in. Then it is moved back and fastened so that her head is between the two stakes.
The second method of securing cows is as follows:- A chain is fastened to the wall. This is placed round the cows neck. There is a S at the loose end of the chain and a ring at the other end - the end that is fastened to the wall. The S is slipped through the ring.
This method is older and more commonly used than the first one.
