- Tanning of leather
Long ago when there were no tanneries the people had a way of their own for tanning leather, and this is how they did it: they used to bark the oak with implements called "strippers" a flat piece of iron inserted into a wooden handle, it would represent the "slane" which they have for cutting turf in the Bog of Allen, and in other bogs at the present day. They would leave the bark in a place called a barkyard to dry in the sun, there was one at Mr St. John's place in Killurney. When the bark was well dry there used to put it into tanks made for the purpose in the bark yard, which would be full of water, then they would leave the hides and the bark steeping together. After three weeks steeping they would take the hide out, and all the hair and dirt would be left behind. They had a square timber log and they used to place the leather upon and beat it with a mallet to make it firm.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
