- The houses long ago were made of mud. All mud walls houses were in it then. The chimneys were built of clay and sallies with a few small square stone on the top. It was plastered all over with mud. The fire place was built of clay and flat stones and the hob was built of stone and yellow clay. There were two square blocks at each side of the hob. These were built of stone and clay. There was a hole in the hob in which tea and other things were kept. The grate was built of clay and bars were placed on top.
