At the side of the churn a circular glass is inserted through which one can see into the barrel. If it is difficult to make the butter as it is in winter, hot water is poured into the churn.
When the butter is gathered in a big mass by revolving the churn for a short time, the milk is drawn off, and the butter is taken out and I placed in a cooler. It is washed away many times until all the milk is removed. The butter is then placed on a clean table where it is salted. It is then worked by butter spades into the required sizes.
Any person who entered the house while the butter making was in progress would have to twist the barrel for a few minutes, otherwise the people of the house would think that he was going to steal their butter.
Any buttermilk that is not required for human consumption is fed to pigs and calves.- Collector
