“There was an old woman long ago named Ellen Flynn who made candles...”
There was an old woman long ago named Ellen Flynn who made candles. She melted sheep's tallow on an iron. When it was melted she got a stick and tied a great number of bits of hemp along the stick. She caught the stick at each end and dipped it into the tallow. Then she took it up and left it to rest on a chair. When it was hard she dipped it again. She kept on doing that until it got very thick. Then she cut the hemp from the stick and lit the candle to see was it alright. She also made candles from goats tallow. She was a very good hand for making candles.- Collector
