- Soap:
Sheep's tallow mixed with soda and melted down and used for soap long ago.
Candle making:
Sheep's tallow and pigs lard was used for the making of the candles. The candles were called "tallow dips". The wicks were made of lengths of cotton thread that was used for knitting quilts. The cotton thread was twisted together and the melted tallow was poured into a mould and it was afterwards turned out cold.
Dyeing:
They used chip log wood, soot, whorts, elder berries and moss, was used for dyeing.
Baskets:
