Touch
In olden days the people instead of using matches they used to make a fire from a thing called touch.
First they would get saltpetre and melt it in hot water, then they would dip a cloth into the salt-petre and take it out again and dry it well. Then they would get a flint stone and a piece of steel and leave the cloth on the flint stone and strike the steel on the stone and the cloth and the stone would take fire and light up just as good as matches.
That is the way they used to light fires and their pipes before matches were manufactured.- Faisnéiseoir
