    It was a beautiful summer evening and, taking out my bicycle, I went for a spin through the Glen of Aherlow.

    I put the stone pot on the fire, then I got eight lbs of sheep fat. That I had brought from Cahir the day before. I placed it in the pot and waited until it was rendered. Then I got an old bumbeg sheet and cut six strips an end in each hand and kept twisting until it became round. Still holding each end I dipped it in the sheep fat. Then kept rolling it between my palms. Then I dipped it again, and so on until I had a nice round candle twisting a wick to a fine point. Then I layed it on a board in the open air to harden and so on until I had the strips finished. There was big big wool-packs sitting on Gallteemore and the watery November sun was throwing
