- After the famine in 1,847 the potato crop was poor in 1,848 and 1849. People were still starving.
A brother of Matthew, John Matthew, had charge of distributing meal, a pound each to every member of a family, in the Mill in Golden in 1849. He had as manager of the Mill, Charles Bourke of Leinster Road, grandfather of the present Mrs. Bourke.
Another brother of Fr. Matthew Montague had charge of distributing the meal in Ballycarron.
Frank Matthew had a distillery and brewed whiskey and ale in Castle lake in 1851. When the Temperance Movement introduced by his brother in his distillery went down.
