- Mud Houses
There are not as many mud houses now as there were sixty years ago.
A good share of clay would be collected and it would be mixed with water to make it into mortar. As the wall was raised two or three feet with this mortar, barefooted men and women trampled on it to make it firm. These mud houses were very warm in Winter and cool in Summer. They were all thatched.
A good coat of wheaten thatch would last for ten or twelve years.
The thatch was kept in position by scollops which were made from twigs collected in February and left to season.- Bailitheoir
