- In the North of Coore School is the district or townland of Kilternan. There was once a very large Monastic establishment here, which was founded by Saint Ernan (Cill. Captain)
It appears, from old historical records and tradition that St. Columbcille visited Clonmacroise and took Saint Ernan with him as a companion from this famous school. They travelled Southward and came by Kinvara and finally crossed into Clare coming along by the little village of Columbcill where they rested and then went on through the rocky lands of Carron, thence through Kilfenora and southward towards Mount Callon. Here they settled and Saint Ernan founded a school which gave its name to the district. The foundations of the cells were still to be seen. Tradition says that a very large community was established there about year 560. Caves are in the locality where the monks are supposed to have hidden when attacked.
