   to a small turret at the angle. The rest of the building is devoted to the larger rooms. Two remain under the upper vaulting, which is also broken in the middle, and another over the vault which had a wooden roof and trefoil-headed window looking seaward. No trace remains of the side-building from which the castle was attacked in 1642.

   Tromroe was the residence of Fergus O'Brien and with him in 1276 King Turlough Mor O'Brien sought a night's shelter as he fled down the coast to seek aid from the McMahons when his deposed uncle, Brian O'Brien was restored by the power of De Clare. It is probable that Teigue's residence was in the large stone-faced Rath not far from the castle.

   Tromroe Castle itself was built about the year 1490. Two ships of the Spanish Armada perished on the coast of Clare, one at Doonbeg, the second on the reef between Mutton Island and Tromroe Castle.

   The only happening of any interest in connection with the castle took place in 1642. Edward O'Flaherty, of Aran Islands, heard in an evil moment that a castle named Tromroe was possessed by one McWard whom he heard was an honest gentleman and never heard of him before nor knew of what religion or nation he was.
