    shoemaker ever reside in the district in former times, the nearest one being abut three or four miles distant. Clogs are not worn now in the district, but it is said that they were worn long ago. The times are now too modern and people have to keep with the present day fashions.
    Leather was never tanned locally for there were never any tanneries in the district. The nearest place where leather was tanned was Navan which is about five miles from this district of Knockcommon, where the shoemakers who lived outside the district obtained their supplies of leather.
