- In former times they were thatched houses, and had mud walls. They were thatched with the flaggers, which are got from the rivers. They had a bed in the kitchen. It was a settlebed they had for a bed. The chimney's were made of clay.,and wattles and chopped straws. Some of the old houses had no chimney's but a hole through the roof. The fire was on the floor in the centre of the house. Some of the houses had no glass in the windows but I do not know what they used instead. The floors were made of clay in the old houses. Half doors were common long ago. Turf and wood were used for the fire. Rushlights were used for light in the night. Candles were made locally.
