Government Relief - Some relief was granted by the government. Part of the dark road (near here) was lowered and a hill taken down near Rocks. The wages was bad about 4D a day. The men were unable to work.
At Beglins in Garadice Kilcock the local poor law guardians caused a very large pot of stirabout not certain whether oaten or Indian meal to be boiled every day and the poor people came and ate.
The pot was very very large so large that a small man named Jimmy Hughes - the local broom man - used to get in and scrape it. (Jimmy as he was called got some fun out of this. He used to get in the pot and bark like a dog.)
