When she met a traveller, she usually sat up on the back end of the cart, and then the horses refused or was unable to pull. Usually, the travellers out a night carried some holy water and this put her to flight. Ultimately, the local priest came and walked this part of the road, from one stream to the other. He was accompanied by two people holding lighted candles. The priest read from a book, some prayers, as he walked along. When he reached the stream at the end of the stretch of road, a spark was seen to jump into the air from the road, and it is said that he banished the spirit to the Red Sea.
This stretch of road is known as the Seana Scoil. Knox N.S. (modern) is on this road, but there is no trace of an old ruin of a school.
This story is well known to everybody in the Carhuvouler locality, and the name Maíre Geadhealach is a terror to the children at night.
