- (continued from previous page)strong. It is said that Saint Patrick met a tramp one day who had with him some tin. St Patrick asked him what he had and he told a lie and said that he had iron. Then St Patrick told him that because he told a lie he would have to work hard for his living and that he would never have a settled home. The St Patrick met a smith who was carving iron. St Patrick asked him what he had and he told the truth and said that he had iron. Then St Patrick told him that he might stay in a house and that his work would come in the door to him. Long ago the local forges were centres for storytelling and for card playing.
