    midnight and his colossal figure in the dim lights often scared many a Londoner. It is recorded that one night a watch man seeing him lift off the top of a street lamp to light his pipe was carried off unconscious. On another occasion, when in his own carriage he was accosted on a lonely road by a mounted highwayman and ordered out to deliver, but on alighting the robber spurred his horse and fled.
    After a quarter of a century exhibiting he returned in affluence to Bristol where he died of consumption aged 47 years.
    Charles Byrne, another Irish Giant, of 7 feet 9 inches died in London His last request was to bury him under a 12 foot stone lest the body snatchers should unearth him but somehow they got his remains and his skeleton is now in the College of Surgeons London.
