Two hundred years ago Barbavilla was called Southern Ranahan. There was a beautiful convent there and hundreds of nuns were in it. When Cromwell came to Ireland he was jealous of this beautiful convent and wished to have it for himself. He brought his gun, to the top of Joe Fagan's fort, and fired at the convent. The nuns, when they heard the shots fled in terror and never came back. Then Cromwell took the convent and made it in to a beautiful house. Cromwell's officer married Barbra Smith and Cromwell gave them the house and all the land for miles around. Then Barba Smith changed the Ranahan to Barbavilla. Cromwell's gun is to be seen at the present day in Barbavilla House.
