- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)beside the pump to report anyone who refused to salute it. At last one man named Jimmie Reilly made up his mind to take it down. He started his work at his soonest opportunity. He took it down and it was never replaced. The Market Square is situated in the centre of the village, markets, fairs, bazzars, ect. In the famine years a huge fire was lighted and all the rich people gave Indian meal to be made into porridge for the poor people. It used to be boiled in a large pot which was kept in Bells' house opposite the square. It is still to be seen in Tom Fay's yard. The only school in the town was a mixed one. Boys and girls, Catholics and Protestants attended this school. Then Lady Chapman brought Protestant Pamphlets to the school to the children and distributed them. The priests objected to this and decided to build a school for the Catholics alone. At the building of that school everyone helped and we are told the work was completed in three weeks. This is now the girls' school. There was also a private school run by people called Caireys situated at the end of the village. For sewing the girls had to go up to a house nearby. Boarders from Trim and Mullingar attended this school. Some old women are still alive who attended it.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
