- In this district a great many of the old Irish customs still exist. On Saint Stephen's Day groups of boys and young men from the different townslands disguised - in female and other apparel - wearing masks or with blackened faces go from house to house bringing with them a wren. They generally carry a variety of musical instruments mouth organs tamborines etc.
These youths sometimes sing songs and generally amuse the household with dancing or singing.
Rhymes are generally associated with hunting the wren one of these is:-
A treat of money and a treat of beer and we wont call here for another year
Up with the kettle and down with the pan
Give us our money and let us be gone.- Bailitheoir
