The local fairs are held in the town of Edgeworthstown and in the village of Legan, about 3 miles from Rathowen.
The fairs are always held in towns and villages.
The buyers often come to the farmers houses to transact business and this is still done.
There are no local traditions about fairs being held on hills, or at castles or forts.
The town fair is held in the "fair-green" in the middle in the town.
"Toll" is paid in some towns, such as, Longford. This means that the buyer of cattle on leaving the town pays 3 pence a head on small cattle and 6 pence a head on big cattle. He is not allowed to pass until he pays the amount due.
The money thus collected by the Co. Council is used for the purpose of cleaning and washing streets and footpaths which have been dirtied by the animals in the fair.
