They had a book for spelling. they had no steel pens as we have but their pens were made from quills - split in a point. The often had very poor seats in those schools and the roofs propped up with sticks in most of them. Sometimes it was impossible to remain in them with rain down. The teacher went from house to house and spent the nights teaching the children in the houses in which he stopped.I heard this from my Grandmother aged 84 years who attended this school for several months.
