- Long ago the small farmers always threshed their oats in the kitchen. They used to hang up a quilt to save the oats from the fire. In some cases the fire was not in the kitchen while the threshing was gong on. There was another quilt on the dresser to keep the dust and oats from going in on the delph. They used to built the oats on one side of the house and thresh in the middle of the floor with the flail. The flail consisted of two sticks. One of them was called the hand-staff and the other was suple. When the man was done threshing he gave the straw to a man at the door who shook it and put it in a rick in the garden.
