The preparations made for celebrating those feasts were of a very manly character. For weeks before the feast the boys were eying out black thorn sticks and getting them ready in order to have them prepared when the feast would come off.
The first thing they would do was to attend Mass which they used to say was a good beginning. When Mass was over they used go out to the tents and take a drop.
