  1. Shops were not so plentiful long ago as they are at present. People had to go to the town to purchase their goods. Buying and selling was carried on after Mass. Money was not always given in exchange for goods. Goods were exchanged for other goods. Labour was given in exchange for goods. The words connected with buying and selling were "boot" which means when swopping an ass the tinkers look for boot, a luck penny was also given.
"Bant" means an auction. It was considered unlucky to transact business in Sunday. A pedlar went around by the name of John Murphy he sold delph and rags. The names of the various coins were a halfpenny a make, a penny a wing a 3d bit a kidseye, a 6d a tanner, a shilling, a bob.
