- Battlestown is clearly and distinctly mentioned in the earliest charters of Dunbrody. It marks the boundaries of Hervey's grant, as by its bounds runs the river poetically described as the "rushing torrent". It is evident therefore that the name of this district antedates the Norman invasion.In my early days, the old people used to call it Ballinabhowl (I spell it phonetically) A county Waterford friend who is well versed in Irish language told me that in Irish Ballinabhowl distinctly means the place or scene of a battle.
