- Hat making by hand was one of the many crafts of the olden days. Not a great distance from where we stand some of the finest straw hats were made. One of my ancestors was a hat maker by trade.
First the straws were pulled, pressed and sorted. Next they were plaited in plaits of six or more straws and sewn round in the shape of a hat.
Those hats were serviceable and were of the style women wore in those days.
Thraneen hats were also made but they required more skill and time and were sold at higher prices.
