Horse-breeding was a great industry in this district and is still. It is in the Island Hunt area and the farmers make every effort to produce horses suitable for that sport and with success. Horse racing is also carried on. These forms of sport were very popular in old times and many a buyer from foreign countries secured re-mounts here for the armies of their countries. It was a French officer who bought the famous white horse, Maringo, ridden by Napoleon, at Peppers Castle about six miles from here. This horse was only one of hundreds sold to representatives of the French Government. It was a famous district for rearing thorough-breds and as these animals were very(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
