Marriages take place most frequently during Shrove locally. Long ago. May was considered a very unlucky month to get married.
On the night of the marriage, a large crowd of men gather at the house where the wedding is held. They disguise themselves in different ways. They dress very queer and are mostly masked. They are known as straw men. A wedding feast is held at which there is great dancing singing, and great merry-making for two or three hours. In olden times the Bridegroom carried the Bride to the Church on horse-back to get married, and when the ceremony was over, the company present would have a race on their horses for the Bride's garter's there was a special pair of very elaborate one's for that purpose as was the custom in those days.Mary Kirwan- Monglass - Caim- Bailitheoir
