- 92The start of the insurrection in Ballyellis districtIn the year of 1798 Jervis A, White landlord of Ballyellis lived in what is now known as 'The Big House' - a ruin in a field of Mr. Owen Doyle's of Ballyellis.
He formed a corps of Yeos in the district and on one occasion addressed them from the steps outside his front door. He said he had reason to believe that some members of the corps belonged to the United Irishmen and that he would ask those oncerned to stack their arms and go into the house but the United Irishmen amongst them had heard of the Dunlavin Massacre which was perpetrated under like circumstances and refused to be trapped(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
