I just barely remember a family called Lanigan, halter makers, who used stop around before fairs.
Bushmen or gypsies sometimes come around. About 20 years ago they actually made small tables, flower stands &c from furze bushes. I remember watching them & recollect the peeling of the stems & the scorching to turn them. Those who come now in gaudily decorated caravans have cockney accents & offer as hand made lace & bamboo furniture bought in the nearest town.
At weddings, travellers appear at the Church where the bridegroom & his friends throw silver among them. If there is a feast at the bride's house a table is generally prepared for them in an out-house. The last big muster of them that I saw at a wedding was at Stafford's, Ballyelland twelve years ago.
Pensions, doles & cheap houses keep them off the country roads.- Bailitheoir
