- There was both a hurling and a football team in the Island long ago. They always practiced it in Colgan's field which is called the "Tournament field" since and in Fogarties field which is called the "Peer Field" since. They often played against, Moate, Athlone, Clara, Kilbeggan, Tullamore and Kilcormac. The Islands were dressed in "Green and Gold" and their were twenty one men on each side. Sometimes they were beaten. Jim Minnock who is called the "Captain" was the referee and W. Fogarty was the one before him. R. Bracken, Joe Clancy, Mr Healy, J. Coady, and Tom Connolly were noted as the best players. They used pint posts as well as goal posts and they they were made from a dale tree. The pint posts were a few yards away each side of the goal posts. They never kicked the ball across from one townland to another. They used an oval shaped leather ball which cost fifteen shillings. They wore home made boots, black stockings with gold stripes, white nickers, white cap and a gold jumper. The best players(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
