- In this district there are several ways of fore-telling the weather that is pending-forecasts that have stood the test of time. The following are regarded as signs of rain-
1. Blackstairs clouded in the morning.
2. Blackstairs apparently very near.
3. The murmur of the Barrow (which is a quarter of a mile away) heard in the village.
4. The interior of the chapel walls weeping.
5. The smoke blown back down the chimney.
6. A red sky in the morning.
7. A rainbow in the morning.
8. The fowl seeking shelter.
9. Swallows flying low.
10. A cat scratching a table.
11. A dog nipping grass.
12. The wind in the South-West.
13. The soot falling down the chimney.
14. The dogs lazy.
15. Corns on the feet very painful & twinges of rheumatism in joints of elderly people.
16. Croaking of the frog on a fine evening.
The following are regarded as signs of a storm:
1. The cattle huddling together in the field.
